I got two amazing packages recently. A box of black walnuts with husks from my aunt Ruth Anne and a bread bag of yellow aspen leaves from my friend Caroline.
These are great raw materials for making dye.
This is the raw, unwashed mohair straight from Patrick, weighed and ready for washing just before throwing in the dye pot.
Look how dark the water got after boiling the leaves for an hour! As the leaves boiled they released the scent of cooked spinach.
The walnuts made a thick, foamy stew. The scent of the boiling husks was bitter and tannic.
I'm really impressed by the amount of color the mohair holds. Most wool I have dyed with plants has not been nearly as vivid as this.
In a couple of days when the fiber dries I'll card this pretty fluff into batts for spinning.
